Technical Differences Between Wood Shredders And Drum Chippers

Wood shredders and drum chippers are two common types of equipment in the wood processing field. Although both are used for wood crushing, they differ significantly in their working principles, output forms, and application scenarios. Wood shredders primarily use high-speed rotating blades to cut and crush wood, while drum chippers utilize blades on a rotating drum to shred wood into thin flakes.

 

In terms of working principle, wood shredders employ a high-speed universal crushing principle, with a main shaft speed reaching 650 rpm. A motor drives the blades to perform powerful shearing and impact on the wood. This design allows it to process logs up to 300 mm in diameter, with an output particle size controllable to around 30 mm. The core component of a drum chipper is a rotating drum equipped with multiple blades. Wood is pushed onto the drum by a feeding system and shredded into uniform thin flakes by the rotating blades. This structure is more suitable for producing wood chips of specific sizes.

 

In terms of technical characteristics, the design differences between the two types of equipment are mainly reflected in their processing methods and output forms. Wood shredders typically have fewer blades (e.g., two), but boast high speeds and high power (110kW motor), making them suitable for producing coarser wood chips. Drum chippers, on the other hand, utilize multiple blades in conjunction with a precise feeding system to produce more uniform wood chips. This difference makes shredders more suitable for biomass fuel production, while chippers are commonly used in industries like papermaking and engineered wood products where specific shapes of raw materials are required.

 

In practical applications, the choice of equipment depends on the characteristics of the raw materials and the requirements of the final product. For applications requiring higher processing capacity (12-15 t/h) and less stringent requirements on output particle size, wood shredders are more suitable; however, when specific shapes and dimensional consistency are required, drum chippers offer a greater advantage. Furthermore, the equipment's power configuration and feeding system design will also affect its performance in specific production environments.
