A wood chipper (shredder) mainly consists of a base, cutter head, feed inlet, casing, electrical control system, and discharge outlet. Its core component is the cutter head, which is equipped with cutting blades (flying knives) and bottom blades. To improve durability, modern equipment often uses chrome-plated wear-resistant pads for the cutter head, while the blades and fixing bolts are made of special steel.

 

The feeding device, depending on the model, may include a fixed feed inlet, or consist of a feed interface, feed rollers, and an adjustment mechanism (common in drum chippers). Some designs (such as those described in patent CN212146852U) employ adjustable and retractable feed inlets to accommodate raw materials of different shapes. The discharge system typically relies on the airflow generated by the blades during cutter head rotation to blow out the chopped wood chips. Some models are equipped with a screen to sift the wood chips; excessively large chips are returned for further crushing. The drive system can use low-voltage or high-voltage motors. For large equipment, there are mainly two types of drive: belt pulley drive and direct-drive motor.
